I've been playing around with a simple helix model and doing some lighting tests in Carrara 7 Pro Studio. Overly simple yes, but the little project will evolve. It was done to illustrate a simple lighting test on my 3d blog.

I got Carrara about a month ago and I'm finally able to sit down and play with it for a bit now. For 3D, probably the best dollar value out there programwise.

Looks very good... talk about what light setup you used.

It's just two simple spots, one aimed at the front of the object in a pretty normal configuration, then a spot aimed down and behind onto a very dark blue surface with reflective qualities. Nothing special really. Full into and screenshot here

If you have any inkling at all about how to light an object in photography, for instance in a tabletop studio, the same or similar applies to most 3d programs.

have you tried indirect lighting? ive found that it dramatically increases the realism in renders (though at the cost of render time). i think it may help
